What it is for

It is a storage box. People use it for rings and small jewellery, for a set of tumbled stones, for a watch or cufflinks on a dressing table, or simply as a piece on a shelf. If you take a bracelet off at the end of the day, this is where it goes.

About the stone and the inlay

Selenite is a crystalline form of gypsum — calcium sulphate dihydrate, CaSO₄·2H₂O — and sits at Mohs 2, softer than your own fingernail. The seven inlaid stones follow the standard chakra colour sequence used in modern crystal practice, which pairs a colour with each of the seven centres described in tantric and yogic tradition.

Worth knowing, and most sellers will not tell you: the large majority of items sold as “selenite” are satin spar, the fibrous milky-white form of gypsum. True selenite forms transparent bladed crystals and is far too fragile to be hollowed into a box. Both are the same mineral and neither is fake. Care — read this one

Selenite dissolves in water. Keep the box dry, keep it out of the bathroom, and dust it with a soft dry cloth or brush rather than a damp one.

It is soft enough to scratch, so do not slide it across a hard surface, and set it down rather than dropping it — a chip on a thin lid edge does not come back. One practical note: most stones you will keep inside it — quartz, tiger eye, amethyst — are far harder than the box, so place them in gently rather than tipping them.
