What a cluster is

A cluster is a group of crystals that grew together from a shared base, usually inside a cavity in rock where mineral-rich water had space and time to deposit. The points all grow outward from that base, which is why a cluster fans in several directions. Nothing has been carved or shaped — what you are looking at is the crystal habit of the mineral, exactly as it formed. That is the appeal: a tower is cut to a shape somebody chose, a cluster is the shape the stone chose.

Amethyst clusters are the classic, usually from Brazil or Uruguay; Uruguayan material runs darker and costs more. Amethyst clusters are the most-bought piece here. Desert rose is different from the others — it is gypsum or barite that grew in sand, and the sand grains are trapped inside the blades, which is what gives it that rosette shape.

Choosing one

Since nothing is cut to size, each cluster is one of a kind and the photograph is of the actual piece or of one like it — check the product page. Weight and dimensions are listed. Larger is not automatically better: colour depth and how cleanly the points are formed matter more, and a smaller richly coloured amethyst cluster usually looks better on a shelf than a large pale one.

Care

Points are the fragile part and chip easily — handle a cluster by its base, not its top. Dust with a soft dry brush rather than a cloth, which catches on the points. Keep amethyst out of prolonged direct sunlight, which fades the purple over months. Desert rose is soft and crumbly and should not be washed at all.

These are natural uncut crystal formations. Crystals have a long place in tradition and in ritual practice, and that is the spirit in which we sell them.
