About the stone

Jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz, and red jasper gets its colour from iron oxide distributed all through the stone rather than sitting on the surface. That is why the colour goes right through a broken piece. It takes a polish but never a glassy one — jasper stays slightly matte, which is how you tell it from carnelian, its translucent cousin. It is hard, around 7 on the Mohs scale, and among the most durable stones we sell.

Red jasper has been worked for a very long time: it turns up in Egyptian amulets, in Minoan seal stones, and in Roman engraved gems, largely because it is tough enough to carve finely and hold detail.

The tradition

Red jasper is traditionally called the Stone of Endurance and is associated in crystal practice with grounding and the root chakra. The warm earth colours are why it sits in that role. What is the difference between the red jasper bracelets?

They differ by bead size and grade: our AAA natural stone bracelet, an 8mm bracelet and a larger 10mm bracelet. The stone is the same.

Which hand should I wear red jasper on?

Tradition suggests the left wrist for grounding and the right for drive. Either is fine.

Is red jasper the same as carnelian?

No. Both are chalcedony, but red jasper is opaque and matte, while carnelian is translucent and glows when held to light.

How do I spot dyed red jasper?

Rub a bead with a cotton swab and a little nail-polish remover. Red on the swab means dye.
