Smoky Quartz Crystal

Smoky quartz is the smoky brown to grey variety of quartz, coloured by natural irradiation of aluminium impurities in the stone over geological time. It is one of the more durable crystals to wear daily, sitting at 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, and it will not dissolve in water the way selenite does.

In Indian crystal practice, smoky quartz is traditionally associated with grounding, steadiness and letting go of what is no longer needed. Many people wear it as a daily reminder to settle a restless mind. These meanings come from tradition rather than scientific evidence, and smoky quartz is not a treatment for any medical or psychological condition.

Choosing a smoky quartz bracelet

• Bead size. 8mm is the usual everyday choice and suits most wrists. Larger beads make a heavier, more visible piece.
• Single stone or blend. A plain smoky quartz bracelet keeps one intention. A blend such as onyx, smoky quartz and labradorite combines several grounding stones in one piece.
• Colour depth. Natural smoky quartz ranges from pale grey-brown to near black. Variation between beads is normal and is a sign the stone is natural rather than dyed.

Which hand to wear it on

In the traditional approach the left wrist is the receiving side and the right is the projecting side. Smoky quartz is most often worn on the left. There is no rule that makes one wrong; wear it where it feels comfortable.

Caring for smoky quartz

Smoky quartz is hard enough to handle everyday wear and can be rinsed briefly in water. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade the smoky colour over time. Sage smoke, sound, or a few hours on a selenite plate are the usual cleansing methods.
