About the stone

Moonstone is a feldspar, and the soft blue-white glow that gives it its name is a real optical effect called adularescence. The stone formed as two feldspars — orthoclase and albite — separated into alternating microscopic layers while cooling. Light entering the stone scatters off those layers and comes back as that drifting internal sheen, which appears to float just below the surface and moves as you tilt the piece. It is the same class of effect as labradorite's flash, produced by structure rather than pigment.

Peach moonstone is the same mineral with iron giving the warmer body colour. Feldspar has cleavage planes, so moonstone is more fragile than its hardness suggests — it will split along those planes if struck hard.
