What it is made of

Selenite is a crystalline form of gypsum — hydrated calcium sulfate, CaSO₄·2H₂O. It sits at Mohs 2 on the hardness scale, which makes it the softest stone commonly sold as décor or jewellery. Your own fingernail is harder, at around 2.5, so you can genuinely mark it. That one fact is behind every care instruction below.

Worth knowing, and most sellers will not tell you: the overwhelming majority of items sold as “selenite” — towers, plates, pyramids, lamps — are satin spar, the fibrous milky-white form of gypsum. True selenite forms transparent bladed crystals and is far too fragile to be carved. Both are the same mineral, chemically identical, and neither is fake. Care — please read this one

Never let it touch water. This is stricter than the usual crystal advice. Gypsum is genuinely water-soluble, and hot or slightly acidic water dissolves it faster. Do not wash it, do not wipe it with a damp cloth, and do not stand it on a wet surface or a bathroom shelf.

Dust it dry with a soft cloth. Store or display it away from harder stones and keys — at Mohs 2, almost anything will scratch it. It also has perfect cleavage in one direction, so a knock at the wrong angle can split it cleanly.

What this is, and what it isn’t

Selenite’s cleansing associations come from crystal tradition, not from any measured property of gypsum. There is no peer-reviewed evidence that crystals clear negativity from a room or from another stone, and nothing here diagnoses, treats, cures or prevents any medical condition. What a piece like this honestly gives you is a small ritual and a considered object in a room — which, for a lot of people, is the point.
