Hakik Sulemani Crystal

Sulemani hakik bracelets, handcrafted. Two products in this collection.

About the stone

Hakik is the Indian and Persian name for agate, and sulemani hakik is the black-and-white banded variety — the one with strong parallel light and dark layers running through it. Mineralogically it is chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz, and the bands form as silica-rich water fills a cavity in volcanic rock layer by layer over a very long time. A cut across those layers is what gives the stripe.

The name sulemani comes from Suleiman — Solomon — and the stone has been traded under that name across India, Iran and the Arab world for centuries. In the West the same banded material is called onyx or sardonyx, and it is the stone Roman cameo carvers used precisely because they could carve through one coloured layer to reveal another.

Agate takes dye readily and much of the market is dyed. Sulemani hakik's black-and-white banding is commonly natural, but strong uniform colour anywhere in agate should be assumed treated unless stated.

Traditional associations

Sulemani hakik is traditionally worn as a steadying, grounding stone, and it has a long history as a protective stone in South Asian practice. That is the tradition it comes out of, and that is how we sell it.

Care

Agate is hard, around 7 on the Mohs scale, and wears well. Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep bracelet cord dry — the thread wears out long before the stone does.

What this is, and what it isn't

Sulemani hakik is a naturally banded agate. Crystals have a long place in tradition and in ritual practice, and that is the spirit in which we sell them. There is no peer-reviewed evidence that any stone treats, cures or prevents a medical condition, changes your finances, or alters the physical energy of a room. Nothing on this page is medical, psychological or financial advice.
