Black Tourmaline Crystal
The Black Tourmaline Crystal Collection by Calminds — natural black tourmaline in bracelets, orgonite pyramids and tumbles, handcrafted and Reiki-charged.
About the stone
Black tourmaline, properly called schorl, is a complex boron silicate and makes up the large majority of all tourmaline on earth. Its most recognisable feature is physical: run a thumbnail along a raw crystal and you feel deep lengthwise striations, grooves that run the length of the prism. Nothing else in a crystal collection feels quite like it.
Tourmaline is also genuinely pyroelectric and piezoelectric — heat it or squeeze it and it develops a small static charge at its ends, enough to attract ash or dust. Dutch traders in the eighteenth century used tourmaline to pull ash out of their pipes and called it aschentrekker, ash-puller. This is a real, measurable property, and it is also the origin of most modern claims that tourmaline emits energy or blocks radiation. It does not. A static charge that lifts ash is not a shield, and it does nothing at body temperature on your wrist.
The tradition
Black tourmaline is the stone traditionally worn or placed for grounding, and it is the most common choice for a doorway or a desk in modern crystal practice. That is the tradition, and it is what we are selling.
What is in the collection
A bracelet for daily wear, an orgonite pyramid for a desk or shelf, and tumbles for carrying. Seventeen pieces in all.
Care
Tourmaline is hard, 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and durable. Take bracelets off before the shower and the gym — the elastic cord is the weak point. Wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Black Tourmaline FAQs
How do I know black tourmaline is real?
Real black tourmaline is opaque, slightly glassy, and raw pieces show lengthwise grooves. Beads should feel cool and heavy. Very shiny, perfectly uniform, light beads may be glass or dyed stone.
Which hand should I wear a black tourmaline bracelet on?
Tradition suggests the left wrist for grounding and the right for protection. Either is fine.
Black tourmaline vs black onyx: what is the difference?
Both are black, but tourmaline is a boron silicate and onyx is chalcedony (quartz). In tradition, tourmaline is the grounding and protection stone; onyx is associated with steadiness.
Does black tourmaline block EMF?
No. There is no evidence that any stone blocks radiation or EMF.
What this is, and what it isn't
Black tourmaline is a natural boron silicate. Crystals have a long place in tradition and in ritual practice, and that is the spirit in which we sell them at Calminds. There is no peer-reviewed evidence that any stone shields you from negativity, absorbs or transforms energy, blocks EMF or radiation, treats a medical or psychological condition, or alters the physical energy of a room. Nothing on this page is medical or psychological advice.
