Carnelian Crystal
The Carnelian Crystal Collection by Calminds — natural carnelian in bracelets, tea light holders and crystal trees, handcrafted and Reiki-charged.
About the stone
Carnelian is a translucent orange-red chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz, coloured by iron oxide. Its translucency is what separates it from red jasper, its opaque cousin: hold carnelian to a light and it glows warm orange right through. Much of the market is heat-treated, which deepens the colour — an old and accepted practice that has been done since antiquity, and worth knowing rather than assuming.
It is one of the oldest worked stones there is. Carnelian seal rings turn up throughout the ancient Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, chosen because hot wax does not stick to it — a genuinely practical reason, not a symbolic one.
The tradition
Carnelian is traditionally associated with confidence, courage and vitality, and the warm colour is why. That is an association within crystal practice, not an effect.
Wear a carnelian bracelet, light a carnelian tea light holder, or keep a crystal tree on a desk. New to crystal bracelets? See our complete guide by stone type.
Care
Chalcedony is hard, around 7 on the Mohs scale, and carnelian wears well. Keep it out of prolonged strong sunlight, which fades the orange over months — more so on heat-treated material. Wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Carnelian FAQs
How do I know carnelian is real?
Hold a bead up to the light: real carnelian is translucent and glows orange. Opaque, flat-coloured beads are more likely jasper, glass or dyed agate.
Which hand should I wear a carnelian bracelet on?
Tradition suggests the right wrist for confidence and action, the left for warmth. Either is fine.
Is carnelian good for daily wear?
Yes. At around Mohs 7 it is durable. Keep it out of long direct sun to protect the colour.
What this is, and what it isn't
Carnelian is a natural iron-bearing chalcedony. Crystals have a long place in tradition and in ritual practice, and that is the spirit in which we sell them at Calminds. There is no peer-reviewed evidence that any stone boosts confidence, creativity or vitality, invites success, treats a medical condition, or alters the physical energy of a room. Nothing on this page is medical or psychological advice.
