About the stone

Amazonite is a green variety of microcline feldspar. The soft aqua-green comes from trace lead in the crystal structure — a true structural colour, not a treatment — and the white or cream streaking running through it is albite, another feldspar, grown into the same stone.

Despite the name it does not come from the Amazon. The name is an eighteenth-century misattribution that simply stuck; no amazonite deposit has ever been found in the Amazon basin. Most material today comes from Russia, Madagascar, Brazil and Colorado.

Feldspar has cleavage planes, so look for faint straight internal lines when light catches the stone. Those are natural.

The tradition

Care

Amazonite is about 6 on the Mohs scale, so quartz will scratch it — store it separately rather than loose with other stones. Keep it out of prolonged strong sunlight, which fades the green over months. Avoid perfume and hand sanitiser on the polished surface. Wipe with a soft dry cloth.
