Bloodstone Crystal
The Bloodstone Crystal Collection by Calminds — natural bloodstone bracelets and tumbles, handcrafted and Reiki-charged.
About the stone
Bloodstone, also called heliotrope, is a dark green chalcedony flecked with red. The green comes from chlorite and amphibole inclusions in the quartz; the red spots are iron oxide — hematite — and that is all the “blood” is. Most material comes from India, and Indian bloodstone is regarded as the best on the market.
The name heliotrope is Greek for “sun-turning,” from an old belief that the stone would turn the reflection of the sun red when placed in water. The medieval European name came from a Christian legend that the red spots were blood fallen onto jasper at the crucifixion. Both are stories about the stone, and they are the reason it has the reputation it has — worth knowing as history rather than as fact.
The tradition
Bloodstone is traditionally called the Stone of Courage and has been carried as a warrior's and traveller's stone for centuries. That is the tradition in which we sell it.
Wear a bloodstone bracelet daily, or keep a tumble in a pocket. Each piece is natural and no two have the same pattern of red flecking.
Care
Chalcedony is hard, around 7 on the Mohs scale, and bloodstone wears very well. Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Take bracelets off before the shower and the gym — the cord goes long before the stone does.
What this is, and what it isn't
Bloodstone is a natural green chalcedony with iron oxide inclusions. Crystals have a long place in tradition and in ritual practice, and that is the spirit in which we sell them at Calminds. There is no peer-reviewed evidence that any stone boosts confidence, enhances focus, revitalises the mind or body, treats a medical condition, or affects blood or circulation in any way. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
