Is this real agate, and how can I tell? +

Agate is a banded chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz — that formed in layers inside a cavity, which is why the bands follow the shape of the space it grew in. Mohs 6.5 to 7. Natural banding is irregular and never repeats exactly. A great deal of brightly coloured agate on the market — the vivid blues, pinks and purples especially — is dyed. It remains real agate.

How should I look after this bowl? +

Hard and forgiving in daily use. Keep harsh chemicals off dyed material. Lift it supported from underneath rather than by the rim, which is the thinnest part and where cracks start.

Does this bowl bring balance or protection? +

No. Agate is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can bring balance or protection, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect. Nothing here is medical, psychological or financial advice. What it honestly does is remind you of something you decided yourself.
