Is this real green jade, and how can I tell? +

Jade covers two unrelated minerals: nephrite, a calcium-magnesium amphibole, and jadeite, a sodium-aluminium pyroxene. Both are made of tightly interlocked fibrous crystals, which makes jade exceptionally tough — it resists breaking far better than much harder stones, which is why it was worked into axes and blades for thousands of years. Jade is dense and cool to the touch, and rings with a clear note when tapped. A great deal of stone sold as green jade is actually serpentine, aventurine or dyed quartzite.

How should I look after this bowl? +

Toughness is not hardness: jade is around Mohs 6 to 6.5, so a steel key or a quartz stone will still scratch it, and it is porous enough that acids will mark it. No vinegar, lemon or bathroom spray. Lift it supported from underneath rather than by the rim, which is the thinnest part and where cracks start.

Does this bowl attract prosperity or good fortune? +

No. Green jade is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can attract prosperity or good fortune, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect. Nothing here is medical, psychological or financial advice. What it honestly does is remind you of something you decided yourself.
