A polished six-sided tower cut from natural lapis lazuli, deep blue with the gold flecking and white marbling the stone is known for. Weight 300g. SKU LAPIS-TOWER. Stands unaided on a flat base.

About the stone

Lapis lazuli is a rock rather than a single mineral. The blue is lazurite; the gold flecks are pyrite, not gold; the white veining is calcite. The proportions of the three are what make each piece look different, and they are the reason no two towers match. Most of the world’s best lapis has come from the Sar-e-Sang mines in Badakhshan, Afghanistan, and has been mined there for something like six thousand years. Ground lapis was the source of ultramarine, the most expensive pigment in Renaissance painting — which is why the Virgin’s robe is blue in so many paintings of that period.

Expect calcite veining. A piece with no white in it at all, at a low price, is usually dyed jasper or reconstituted stone rather than lapis.

Care

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep it out of water — the calcite in lapis is soft and reacts to acids, and prolonged water can dull the polish. Keep it away from perfume, cleaning sprays and direct strong sunlight over long periods. Set it down on a soft surface; the tip of a tower chips.

Is this real lapis lazuli, and how can I tell? +

Lapis lazuli is not a single mineral but a rock. The blue comes from lazurite, the white marbling is calcite, and the gold flecks people take for gold are pyrite. The classic source is Sar-e-Sang in Badakhshan, Afghanistan, worked for over six thousand years. Real lapis shows uneven blue with some calcite and scattered pyrite. Dyed jasper sold as 'Swiss lapis', dyed howlite and reconstituted lapis pressed from powder are all common.

How should I look after this tower? +

It is soft — Mohs 5 to 5.5 — and the calcite in it reacts badly to water and acids. Take it off before washing your hands, and keep perfume and cleaning products away. The tip is the part that chips, so stand it upright on a flat surface and never lay it where it can roll off. Lift it by the body, not the point.

Does this tower improve communication or wisdom? +

No. Lapis lazuli is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can improve communication or wisdom, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect.
