A Ganesha carved in natural labradorite — a grey stone that looks unremarkable until it catches light at the right angle and flashes blue, gold or green.

What the stone actually is

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar, and the flash is a genuine and well-understood optical effect. As the crystal cooled it separated into alternating microscopic layers of slightly different composition. Light entering the stone reflects off those layers and the reflections interfere with one another, cancelling some wavelengths and reinforcing others. The colour you see is produced by layer thickness, not by pigment — which is why it appears only from certain angles and vanishes as you turn the piece. Mineralogists named the effect labradorescence after the stone, and the stone after Labrador, where it was described in the 1770s.

Labradorite is Mohs 6–6.5 and, more importantly, it has two good cleavage directions — planes along which it splits cleanly. That makes it a stone to set down carefully rather than one to drop.

The tradition, as tradition

Modern crystal practice calls labradorite the stone of transformation and associates it with intuition and the third eye. Ganesha is invoked at the beginning of ventures as the remover of obstacles, and is among the most widely kept idols in Indian homes.
