What this is, and what it isn't

Smoky quartz is quartz (SiO2) at Mohs 7, and its brown tone comes from natural irradiation of aluminium impurities — which is why long direct sunlight fades it. Its grounding associations come from crystal tradition, not from a measured property. There is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that crystals clear negativity or relieve stress. Is this real smoky quartz, and how can I tell? +

Smoky quartz is quartz whose brown-to-grey colour comes from natural irradiation acting on trace aluminium in the crystal. Mohs 7. Natural smoky quartz is rarely uniformly black; look for graded depth of colour through the stone. A good deal of very dark smoky quartz on the market has been irradiated to deepen the colour. It remains real quartz.

How should I look after this bracelet? +

The colour is light-sensitive and can pale over long sun exposure. Keep it out of a hot windowsill. On a stretch bracelet the elastic is what fails first, not the stone, so roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide, and take it off before showering.

Does this bracelet ground you or absorb negativity? +

No. Smoky quartz is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can ground you or absorb negativity, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect.
