Is this real red jasper, and how can I tell?
Red jasper is an opaque chalcedony coloured by iron oxide — the same family as carnelian and agate, but fully opaque rather than translucent. Mohs 6.5 to 7. It should be completely opaque even against a bright light, with a smooth, even matt-to-glassy polish.
How should I look after this crystal tree?
Hard and forgiving. Dust dry; avoid harsh chemical cleaners. This is a wire-and-adhesive piece: never rinse or soak it, because water works into the wraps and the base and loosens them, usually permanently. Dust it with a soft dry brush rather than a cloth, which snags on the wires, and always lift it by the base.
Does this crystal tree ground you or protect you?
No. Red jasper is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can ground you or protect you, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect. Nothing here is medical, psychological or financial advice. What it honestly does is remind you of something you decided yourself.
