What the stone actually is

Black tourmaline's mineral name is schorl — the iron-rich member of the tourmaline group, a complex borosilicate that crystallises in long three-sided prisms with striations running down their length. It is Mohs 7 to 7.5, harder than steel and hard-wearing enough for daily use, which is more than can be said for most black stones in jewellery.

Tourmaline has two properties that are genuinely real and measurable. It is pyroelectric: heat it and a voltage develops across the crystal. It is also piezoelectric: squeeze it and the same thing happens. Dutch traders in the 18th century warmed tourmaline to pull ash out of their pipes with it and called the stone aschentrekker, the ash-puller. We tell you this because it is the origin of nearly every modern claim that tourmaline emits energy or blocks radiation — and those claims are not what the physics says. A stone on your wrist at body temperature is doing nothing. The effect needs a temperature change or mechanical pressure, and even then it produces a static charge, not radiation shielding.

One honest note on the shape: a "double point" in schorl is cut and polished to that form. Naturally double-terminated tourmaline crystals exist but are uncommon, and this is a shaped piece, not a found one.

The tradition, as tradition

Black tourmaline is the stone most associated with protection and grounding in modern crystal practice, and is placed with the root chakra. That is a genuine tradition with a real history, and it is the reason most people want the stone. It is not an effect.

Wearing and care

• Open and close the cuff gently at the widest part of the band, not at the wrap. Repeated hard flexing is what eventually loosens wire-wrapped settings.
• The stone is fine with daily wear; the gold-tone plating is the part that will wear. Keep it away from perfume, sanitiser and sweat where you can, and take it off before showering.
• Wipe with a dry cloth. No dips, no ultrasonic cleaners — those attack the plating rather than the stone.
• Cleanse dry if you keep to that practice: sage smoke, sound, or a selenite plate.

Natural variation

Colour depth, surface striations and internal structure differ on every stone. Those are characteristics of schorl, not defects.

What this is, and what it isn't

This is a stone bracelet. It does not protect you, ground you, absorb, block, neutralise or transform any kind of energy, shield you from EMF, Wi-Fi, phones or anyone's intentions, or affect your body, mood or resilience. There is no evidence that any stone does, and the pyroelectric effect described above does not make one. Nothing here is medical or psychological advice.
