About the symbol

The evil eye — nazar in Hindi, Urdu and Turkish — is among the most widely spread symbols in human culture. The concentric blue-and-white eye has been made in glass in the eastern Mediterranean for thousands of years, and the belief it answers to is found from Greece and Turkey through West Asia into South Asia and North Africa, across religions that otherwise share very little. Blue was used because it was the rarest and most striking colour available to early glassmakers.

The red thread is a separate tradition that ended up paired with it — red cords are tied on the wrist in Hindu, Jewish and Chinese custom alike.

The evil eye bead is glass, not stone. The nazar is a Mediterranean and West Asian tradition going back millennia, and the concentric blue-and-white design is made by layering molten glass. Real lampworked glass beads show slight irregularity in the rings and small internal bubbles; printed plastic imitations are perfectly uniform.

How should I look after this bracelet? +

Glass chips on impact, so keep it from knocking against harder stones. Wipe it dry; keep solvents off any metal fitting. On a stretch bracelet the elastic is what fails first, not the stone, so roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide, and take it off before showering.
