About the materials

Lava stone is basalt that cooled fast enough to trap gas bubbles, which is what makes it porous and surprisingly light. That porosity is the practical point of a lava bracelet: the beads hold a few drops of essential oil and release the scent slowly through the day. What are the beads in this bracelet made of? +

Lava stone is basalt — volcanic rock full of gas bubbles, which is why it is light and matt rather than glassy. Mohs about 6, but the pores mean it scuffs and the porosity is the point: many people use lava beads to hold a drop of essential oil. The evil eye bead is glass, not stone. The nazar is a Mediterranean and West Asian tradition going back millennia, and the concentric blue-and-white design is made by layering molten glass. Real lampworked glass beads show slight irregularity in the rings and small internal bubbles; printed plastic imitations are perfectly uniform.

How should I look after this bracelet? +

Lava is porous, so it absorbs oil, soap and perfume and will not release them; do not soak it. Glass chips on impact, so keep it from knocking against harder stones. Wipe it dry; keep solvents off any metal fitting. On a stretch bracelet the elastic is what fails first, not the stone, so roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide, and take it off before showering.
