What the stone actually is

Green aventurine is quartz — usually a quartzite — carrying tiny flat platelets of fuchsite, a chromium-rich mica. The chromium gives the green; the platelets catch light and produce the faint glitter you see when you turn it. That shimmer has a name of its own, aventurescence, and the history behind the name is worth knowing.

The word comes from Italian a ventura, "by chance". Venetian glassmakers in the 17th century accidentally produced a sparkling copper-flecked glass and named it aventurine for the accident. The mineral was named afterwards, for looking like the glass. So the glass came first — which is also why a good deal of what is sold as aventurine today is in fact that glass, or dyed green quartzite. Real aventurine's glitter is scattered and uneven; glass glitters uniformly all the way through.

Quartzite is around Mohs 6.5–7, so the stone itself holds up well to daily wear. As with the tourmaline cuff, a "double point" here is cut and polished to that shape rather than found that way.

The tradition, as tradition

Green aventurine is called the stone of opportunity in modern crystal practice and is placed with the heart chakra. That is a genuine tradition and the reason most people choose it. It is not an effect the stone has.

Wearing and care

• Open and close the cuff at the widest part of the band, not at the wire wrap. Flexing the wrap is what loosens these settings over time.
• The stone takes daily wear; the gold-tone plating is what wears first. Take it off before showering, and keep perfume and sanitiser off the metal.
• Dry cloth only. No jewellery dips or ultrasonic cleaners — those attack the plating.
• Cleanse dry if that is part of your practice: sage smoke, sound, or a selenite plate.
