The mineral. Citrine is quartz — silicon dioxide, SiO₂, Mohs 7 — and its yellow-to-amber colour comes from trace iron in the crystal structure. The chips here are tumbled rather than cut, so shade varies from branch to branch; that variation is the mark of natural stone rather than dyed or glass beads, which are uniform.

Something the trade rarely explains. Untreated citrine is genuinely uncommon in nature, and it is pale — a soft lemon or smoky honey. The deep orange-brown "citrine" that fills most of the market is amethyst or smoky quartz that has been heated, which converts the iron colour centres from purple to gold. Heating is a long-standing, accepted gemstone practice and the result is still real quartz, not glass or plastic — but it is a treatment, and you deserve to know it exists so you can ask about any citrine you are offered, ours included.

Care. Dust with a soft dry cloth, and keep it out of long direct sunlight: citrine's iron-based colour is light-sensitive and will pale over months on a sunny windowsill, heat-treated material fastest of all. Is this natural citrine or heat-treated amethyst?
Most citrine sold anywhere in the world, including the chips used on trees like this, is amethyst or smoky quartz that has been heated — that is what produces the deep orange-brown colour buyers expect. It is still genuine quartz and the colour is permanent, but it is a treatment and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise. Truly untreated natural citrine is much rarer and noticeably paler, a soft lemon rather than amber.

Then how do I tell citrine from dyed quartz or glass?
Look at variation. Natural tumbled chips, treated or not, differ from one another in depth of colour, and many carry faint internal veils or fractures. Dyed material is suspiciously uniform and often shows colour pooled in surface cracks, while glass chips typically contain small rounded bubbles and have a smoother, more moulded look than broken-and-tumbled stone.

Can I wash the tree or rinse the chips?
No. The chips are wrapped onto wire branches and the trunk is set into the base with adhesive, so water seeps into the wraps and the glue and loosens them, usually for good. Dust it dry with a soft cloth or a clean dry brush. This applies to every wire-and-glue crystal tree, not only ours.

Where should I place it?
In Feng Shui and Vastu practice the Southeast corner is the usual choice, and a desk, shop counter or cash box area is the other common one. Practically, put it somewhere you actually see during the working day and out of direct sunlight, since citrine's iron colour pales with sustained UV — a sunny windowsill is the worst spot for it.
