About the stone

Hakik is the Indian and Persian name for agate, and sulemani hakik is the black-and-white banded variety. Mineralogically it is chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz: the bands formed as silica-rich water filled a cavity in volcanic rock layer by layer over a very long time, so a cut across them reads like tree rings.

The name comes from Suleiman — Solomon — and the stone has been traded under it across India, Iran and the Arab world for centuries. In the West the same material is called onyx or sardonyx, and it is what Roman cameo carvers used, precisely because they could carve through one coloured layer to reveal another underneath.

Agate takes dye readily. Sulemani's black-and-white banding is commonly natural, but any strong uniform colour in agate should be assumed treated unless stated.

Care

Agate is hard at around 7 on the Mohs scale and wears very well. The elastic cord is the weak point — take it off before the shower and the gym.

Sulemani hakik is a naturally banded agate. Crystals have a long place in tradition and in ritual practice, and that is the spirit in which we sell them. Frequently Asked Questions
Is this real Sulemani hakik, and how can I tell? +

Hakik, or Sulemani hakik, is banded agate — a chalcedony, microcrystalline quartz, whose bands formed in layers inside a rock cavity. Mohs 6.5 to 7. The banding is irregular and never repeats exactly. Very uniform, high-contrast black-and-white banding often indicates dyed material. Much Sulemani hakik on the market is dyed or heat-treated to sharpen the contrast of the bands. It remains real agate.

How should I look after this bracelet? +

Hard and forgiving in daily wear. Keep harsh chemicals away, particularly from dyed pieces. On a stretch bracelet the elastic is what fails first, not the stone, so roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide, and take it off before showering.

Does this bracelet protect the wearer or ward off the evil eye? +

No. Sulemani hakik is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can protect the wearer or ward off the evil eye, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect. Nothing here is medical, psychological or financial advice. What it honestly does is remind you of something you decided yourself.
