About the motif

The evil eye — nazar in Hindi, Urdu and Turkish — is one of the oldest and most widely spread symbols in human culture. The concentric blue-and-white eye design that everyone recognises has been made in glass in the eastern Mediterranean for thousands of years, and the belief it answers to — that envy can carry harm — is found from Greece and Turkey through West Asia into South Asia and North Africa, across religions that otherwise share very little.

Blue was used because it was the rarest and most striking colour available to early glassmakers. The design is a charm within a tradition, and a beautiful one.

Care

Most evil eye pieces combine glass with stone or thread. Glass chips on impact. Thread bracelets are meant to be worn until they wear through — traditionally that is not a failure but the end of the charm's term. Keep glass pieces out of direct knocks and wipe with a soft dry cloth.

What this is, and what it isn't

These are charms in a very old cultural tradition, made from glass and natural stone. Crystals and charms have a long place in tradition and in ritual practice, and that is the spirit in which we sell them.
