What this is, and what it isn't

The mineral. Tree Agate is a form of chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz, SiO2 — at Mohs 6.5–7, so it is hard and well suited to daily wear. Its green branching patterns are inclusions of iron and manganese oxides that grew through the stone, not fossilised plants, although the resemblance is what gave it the name. Mineralogically it is closer to a white dendritic agate than to moss agate, with which it is often confused.

The tradition. In crystal practice Tree Agate is associated with grounding, steadiness and slow, patient growth — an association drawn from its tree-like markings. That link comes from tradition and symbolism, not from any measured property of the quartz.

The evidence. There is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that crystals produce physical or psychological effects. Where people find value, it comes from the practice — choosing an intention and carrying a visible reminder of it — rather than from the stone itself. We would rather describe that honestly than promise something the mineral cannot do.

Is this real agate, and how can I tell? +

Agate is a banded chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz — that formed in layers inside a cavity, which is why the bands follow the shape of the space it grew in. Mohs 6.5 to 7. Natural banding is irregular and never repeats exactly. A great deal of brightly coloured agate on the market — the vivid blues, pinks and purples especially — is dyed. It remains real agate.

How should I look after this bracelet? +

Hard and forgiving in daily use. Keep harsh chemicals off dyed material. On a stretch bracelet the elastic is what fails first, not the stone, so roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide, and take it off before showering.

Does this bracelet bring balance or protection? +

No. Agate is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can bring balance or protection, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect.
