Tiger's eye is quartz that grew through a fibrous mineral and gradually replaced it, keeping the fibre structure intact. Those parallel fibres reflect light as a single moving band — an effect gemmologists call chatoyancy, from the French for cat's eye. Mohs 7. The band of light should move as you turn the stone. A painted or printed imitation keeps its highlight in the same place at every angle. Red and some blue tiger's eye on the market is heat-treated or dyed. Golden-brown tiger's eye is normally natural.
How should I look after this bracelet?
Prolonged strong sunlight can pale the gold tones over months. Keep it off a windowsill and away from bleach and bathroom cleaners, which dull the polish.
