What "ruby quartz" actually means — the honest answer

We would rather you heard this from us than found it out later. "Ruby quartz" is a trade name, not a mineral species, and it is not ruby. Real ruby is corundum — aluminium oxide, Mohs 9, one of the hardest gem materials there is, and priced accordingly. This is quartz, Mohs 7, and the deep even red is achieved by dye or colour treatment rather than occurring naturally at this saturation.

That does not make it a bad bead. Treated quartz is real stone, it is durable, and at 8 mm faceted it looks very good — the point of faceting is that flat surfaces bounce back far more light than a smooth bead, which is what gives the deep red its life. But it is not ruby, it is not a natural colour, and anyone selling it as either is not being straight with you. Test it the easy way: a natural red stone this even and this affordable is essentially never natural.

The tradition, as tradition

Red stones are associated with vitality and the root and heart chakras in modern crystal practice. That is a tradition and the reason people are drawn to the colour — not an effect.

Wearing and care — treated stone needs a little more

• Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight. Colour treatments fade with UV far faster than natural colour does, and it does not come back.
• Take it off before showering or swimming, and keep perfume, sanitiser and hairspray off it.
• Wipe with a soft dry cloth. No jewellery dips, no ultrasonic cleaners — both can strip treated colour.
• Faceted edges hold dust; a soft dry brush restores the sparkle better than a cloth.
• Roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide.

Which hand

Convention puts receiving stones on the left and expressive ones on the right. There is no mechanism behind it — wear it wherever it is comfortable.
