Description

A handcrafted coaster set in natural pyrite chips set in orgonite resin. Pyrite is the stone traditionally kept where money is handled, which is why this set usually ends up on a desk.

About the stone

Pyrite is iron sulphide, FeS₂ — the mineral called Fool's Gold. It grows in near-perfect cubes with flat metallic faces, and the gold colour and lustre are natural, not a coating. Its streak against unglazed porcelain is greenish-black while real gold streaks gold, which is the definitive test and costs nothing.

How to Use

Care

Keep it dry. Pyrite is iron sulphide and moisture converts it to iron sulphate and sulphuric acid — collectors call it pyrite decay, and it shows as white powder and crumbling edges. Wipe with a dry cloth only; no solvents, which haze cured resin.

Is this real pyrite, and how can I tell? +

Pyrite is iron sulphide, FeS2 — a genuine metallic mineral. The gold colour and shine are the mineral itself, with no plating or dye on it. Mohs 6 to 6.5. It is the original fool's gold, and the old tests still work: gold is soft, heavy and malleable, while pyrite is brittle, strikes sparks against steel and leaves a greenish-black streak.

How should I look after this coaster? +

Pyrite's real weakness is damp. Exposed to air and moisture it oxidises — dulling, then crumbling at the edges, sometimes with a faint sulphur smell. Collectors call it pyrite decay and it cannot be reversed. Keep it dry, never rinse it, and never cleanse it in water or salt water. Lay it flat and lift it with both hands; thin flat pieces crack across the middle if picked up at one edge.

Does this coaster attract money or wealth? +

No. Pyrite is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can attract money or wealth, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect.
