Is this real pyrite, and how can I tell? +

Pyrite is iron sulphide, FeS2 — a genuine metallic mineral. The gold colour and shine are the mineral itself, with no plating or dye on it. Mohs 6 to 6.5. It is the original fool's gold, and the old tests still work: gold is soft, heavy and malleable, while pyrite is brittle, strikes sparks against steel and leaves a greenish-black streak.

How should I look after this pen? +

Pyrite's real weakness is damp. Exposed to air and moisture it oxidises — dulling, then crumbling at the edges, sometimes with a faint sulphur smell. Collectors call it pyrite decay and it cannot be reversed. Keep it dry, never rinse it, and never cleanse it in water or salt water. Set stones are the vulnerable part of any pen: a drop onto a hard floor is what loosens or chips them, so use the case.

Does this pen attract money or wealth? +

No. Pyrite is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can attract money or wealth, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect.
