What this is, and what it isn't

The mineral. Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide, Mohs 3.5 — soft and porous, which is exactly why it takes dye so readily. A great deal of the blue "turquoise" and "white buffalo" sold worldwide is in fact dyed howlite. Ours is undyed, and the grey-black veining you see is the natural marbling of the stone. Because it is porous, keep it away from perfume, sanitiser, oils and prolonged water.

The tradition. In crystal practice Howlite is the "stone of peace", associated with quieting a busy mind and encouraging patience. That association comes from tradition and spiritual practice — it is not a measured property of the mineral, and we describe it that way on purpose.

The evidence. There is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that crystals produce physical or psychological effects, and no stone treats insomnia or anger. Where people find value it comes from the practice — the intention set while putting it on, and the visible reminder through the day — rather than from the stone itself.

Is this real howlite, and how can I tell? +

Howlite is a calcium borosilicate, naturally white with grey or black veining. It is soft, Mohs 3.5. It is porous and very soft — a pin will mark it. Its grey web-like veining is its natural signature. Howlite is the material most often dyed blue and sold as turquoise, because it takes dye so readily. Ours is sold as what it is.

How should I look after this bracelet? +

Soft and porous, so it scratches and it will absorb oils, perfume and dye from its surroundings. Keep it dry and store it on its own. On a stretch bracelet the elastic is what fails first, not the stone, so roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide, and take it off before showering.

Does this bracelet calm an overactive mind? +

No. Howlite is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can calm an overactive mind, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect. Nothing here is medical, psychological or financial advice. What it honestly does is remind you of something you decided yourself.
