A six-inch Ganesha, seated, four-armed, carved by hand from a single block of deep green stone. Behind the head sits a full prabhavali — the carved halo — cut from that same block rather than joined on. Below, a lotus base. Between them: the mukut, the broad ears, the trunk, the folds of the dhoti, the ornament at the wrists. All of it cut by an artisan working the stone directly.

The prabhavali is the detail worth pausing on. Carving an open halo from solid stone means removing material around a form that must not crack — the point where most carvings are simplified, or made in pieces and assembled. This one is not.

Ganesha is Vighnaharta, remover of obstacles, invoked at every beginning: a new home, a new venture, the first page of a ledger. Green stone has carried a parallel meaning for just as long — prosperity that arrives steadily rather than suddenly, and the calm to hold onto it. Carved together, they say one thing. Obstacles cleared, and the steadiness to keep going once they are.

Traditionally, a Ganesha idol faces into the home rather than out of it, and is never placed directly on the floor. Rest it on a chowki or a folded cloth.

• Wipe with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth — no chemical cleaners or abrasive polish
• Do not immerse in water
• Rest it on cloth or a wooden chowki rather than bare stone or metal
• Lift with both hands, supporting the base — never by the prabhavali or an arm
