About the material

Goldstone is a man-made glass, not a mined mineral — and we would rather say that plainly than let you assume otherwise. It is made by melting silica with copper salts under controlled conditions so that tiny flakes of metallic copper form and stay suspended in the glass as it cools. Those flakes are the glitter. Brown goldstone is the original and most common colour. It has been made in Italy since around the seventeenth century and is sometimes sold under the name aventurine glass, which is where the mineral aventurine got its name — the mineral was named after the glass, not the other way around.

Because it is glass, every piece is consistent in colour and the sparkle is even. There is no natural variation to look for here, and nothing to test for authenticity beyond the copper flecks themselves.

How a pendulum is used

Dowsing is a practice, not an instrument reading. The chain is held still between finger and thumb, the pendulum is allowed to hang, and the practitioner watches which way it swings. Practitioners typically establish their own directions first — one swing for yes, another for no — and work from there. It is also used simply as a focus object, something to hold and watch while thinking a question through.

A pendulum moves because of tiny, unconscious movements in the hand of the person holding it. This is a well-documented effect, called the ideomotor response. It is worth knowing, and it does not stop the practice from being useful to people as a way of slowing down and paying attention to their own response to a question.

Care

Glass chips and cracks on impact, and the tip is the vulnerable part — keep it in a pouch or box rather than loose in a bag. Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep it away from harsh cleaners, which will dull the polish.
