What this is, and what it isn't

The mineral. Despite the name, Dalmatian Jasper is not a true jasper. It is a fine-grained igneous rock, largely feldspar and quartz, and its dark spots are usually arfvedsonite (a black amphibole) rather than the black tourmaline they are often sold as. It measures roughly 6–7 on the Mohs scale, which makes it hard-wearing for daily use. Every bead's spotting is different, because the pattern is a record of how that particular rock cooled.

The tradition. In crystal practice Dalmatian Jasper is associated with grounding, playfulness and steadying the mood, and is linked to the Root and Sacral chakras. Those associations come from tradition and spiritual practice — they are not measured properties of the rock, and the chakra system is a spiritual framework rather than a scientific one.
