Black tourmaline's mineral name is schorl — the iron-rich member of the tourmaline group, a complex borosilicate. It is Mohs 7 to 7.5, one of the harder stones we sell. Schorl grows in three-sided prisms with fine lines running lengthwise, and you can often still see those striations on a polished piece. Dyed black glass and dyed howlite show none.
