About the stone

Black tourmaline, properly called schorl, is a boron silicate. Run a thumbnail along it and you feel deep lengthwise grooves running the length of the crystal — nothing else in a collection feels like it.

Tourmaline is genuinely pyroelectric and piezoelectric: warm it or squeeze it and opposite ends develop opposite electrical charges, enough to attract ash. Dutch traders used it to clean their pipes and called it aschentrekker, ash-puller. That is real and measurable — and it is also where most modern claims that tourmaline blocks radiation come from. It does not. A static charge that lifts ash is not a shield, and nothing happens at body temperature on a wrist.

How to Use

The thread is the weak point, not the stone — take it off before the shower and the gym. Tourmaline itself is hard at 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.

Is this real black tourmaline, and how can I tell? +

Black tourmaline's mineral name is schorl — the iron-rich member of the tourmaline group, a complex borosilicate. It is Mohs 7 to 7.5, one of the harder stones we sell. Schorl grows in three-sided prisms with fine lines running lengthwise, and you can often still see those striations on a polished piece. Dyed black glass and dyed howlite show none.

How should I look after this bracelet? +

Hard-wearing and easy. Dust it dry; the setting or plating on a piece will wear long before the stone does. On a stretch bracelet the elastic is what fails first, not the stone, so roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide, and take it off before showering.

Does this bracelet block EMF or absorb negative energy? +

No. Black tourmaline is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can block EMF or absorb negative energy, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect.
