About the stone

Black tourmaline, properly called schorl, is a boron silicate with deep lengthwise striations you can feel with a thumbnail. It is traditionally the grounding stone in crystal practice, and the usual choice for a doorway or a desk.

How to Use

Light a standard tea light in the holder. Let it cool fully before moving it, and set it on a heat-tolerant surface. Never leave a lit candle unattended.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this real black tourmaline, and how can I tell? +

Black tourmaline's mineral name is schorl — the iron-rich member of the tourmaline group, a complex borosilicate. It is Mohs 7 to 7.5, one of the harder stones we sell. Schorl grows in three-sided prisms with fine lines running lengthwise, and you can often still see those striations on a polished piece. Dyed black glass and dyed howlite show none.

How should I look after this holder? +

Hard-wearing and easy. Dust it dry; the setting or plating on a piece will wear long before the stone does. Heat and stone are a poor combination: let the holder cool fully before moving it, and use a tealight in a metal cup so wax does not soak into the stone.

Does this holder block EMF or absorb negative energy? +

No. Black tourmaline is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can block EMF or absorb negative energy, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect. Nothing here is medical, psychological or financial advice. What it honestly does is remind you of something you decided yourself.
