What "Classic Edition" means, plainly

This is the honest, lower-priced tier, and the difference is appearance rather than authenticity. The amethyst is a lighter purple and often shows white banding or colour zoning. The rose quartz is a pale, milky pink. Both are genuine natural stone — no glass, no dyed substitute — but they have an earthier, more understated look than our premium range, where the colour is deeper and more even.

We spell that out on the product page rather than letting a photograph do the work, because the single most common disappointment in this category is a buyer expecting premium colour at a classic price.

What the two stones are

Amethyst is quartz coloured violet by trace iron and natural irradiation over geological time. Heat it and it turns gold — that is precisely how most commercial citrine is made. Which is also a useful care note: keep amethyst out of strong sustained sunlight, because UV fades the purple permanently.

Rose quartz is quartz coloured pink by microscopic fibrous inclusions; electron microscopy has identified fibres of a dumortierite-like mineral running through the crystal. Those fibres scatter light, which is why rose quartz is cloudy rather than glassy — so the pale milky look here is the sign of real, untreated stone. A vivid transparent pink would be the thing to be suspicious of.

Both are Mohs 7 and suited to daily wear.

Rose quartz is the stone most associated with love and the heart chakra in modern crystal practice; amethyst is associated with calm and the third eye. Care

• Keep both out of prolonged direct sunlight. Amethyst and rose quartz both fade with sustained UV, permanently. Do not charge them on a windowsill.
• Take them off before showering or swimming; water is hardest on the elastic.
• Keep perfume, sanitiser and hairspray off them.
• Roll them on and off rather than stretching them wide.
• Cleanse dry: sage smoke, sound, moonlight or a selenite plate.

Natural variation

Colour depth, banding and cloudiness differ bead to bead and set to set. In these two stones that variation is the evidence they are real.
