Description

A coaster cut from a natural amethyst slice with a polished gold trim — rectangular, smooth-edged, deep purple. The gold edge is what makes it read as a decor piece rather than a rough slice.

About the stone

Amethyst is quartz coloured purple by traces of iron that were altered by natural radiation in the ground over geological time. The colour is more fragile than people expect: sustained sunlight fades a deep purple amethyst to pale lilac and eventually to nearly colourless, permanently. Heat does it faster — which is exactly how most commercial citrine is made, from amethyst.

The name comes from the Greek amethystos, “not drunk”: the Greeks carved drinking cups from it believing it would prevent intoxication. That is the oldest recorded crystal claim we know of, and a useful reminder of why we describe these things as tradition.

Care

Keep it out of direct sunlight — amethyst fades and the colour does not come back. A natural slice has an uneven edge under the trim, so set it down rather than sliding it. Wipe with a soft dry cloth.

Is this real amethyst, and how can I tell? +

Amethyst is quartz — silicon dioxide — coloured violet by traces of iron combined with natural irradiation over geological time. It is Mohs 7, hard enough for everyday handling. Natural amethyst usually shows uneven colour, with darker zones or banding rather than one flat purple. A very deep, perfectly even purple at a low price is usually dyed quartz or glass.

How should I look after this coaster? +

Amethyst fades in sunlight, and the fading is permanent. Keep it out of a sunny window and never 'charge' it in direct sun. Heat does the same thing — sustained heat turns amethyst gold, which is how most commercial citrine is made. Lay it flat and lift it with both hands; thin flat pieces crack across the middle if picked up at one edge.

Does this coaster calm, relieve anxiety or aid sleep? +

No. Amethyst is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can calm, relieve anxiety or aid sleep, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect.
