About the stone

Agate is a banded form of chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz. The bands form as silica-rich water fills a cavity in volcanic rock in successive layers over a long time, which is why a cross-section reads like tree rings. Sliced thin and held to light, agate is genuinely translucent — the banding is the whole reason this product exists, and it is why a wind chime made from it belongs in a window rather than a dark corner.

Agate takes dye readily, and a great deal of the brightly coloured agate on the market is dyed. Where a slice on this chime carries a strong uniform colour, assume it is dyed unless the listing says otherwise — that is standard for the material and we would rather tell you than not.

Where to hang it

A window with light behind it, or a balcony door — somewhere it is backlit and somewhere it can move. The sound is a soft stone-on-stone clink rather than the ring of a metal chime. In Feng Shui practice a chime is traditionally hung at an entrance or a window as a marker of movement and welcome; that is the tradition it comes out of.

Care

Agate is hard, around 7 on the Mohs scale, but the slices are thin and they are the breakable part — hang it where a door will not swing into it. Dust with a soft dry cloth. It can take a covered balcony; it should not hang in the open where rain and hard wind will reach it, because the cords and fittings weather long before the stone does.

Is this real agate, and how can I tell? +

Agate is a banded chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz — that formed in layers inside a cavity, which is why the bands follow the shape of the space it grew in. Mohs 6.5 to 7. Natural banding is irregular and never repeats exactly. A great deal of brightly coloured agate on the market — the vivid blues, pinks and purples especially — is dyed. It remains real agate.

How should I look after this wind chime? +

Hard and forgiving in daily use. Keep harsh chemicals off dyed material. Thin agate slices chip at the drilled holes, which is where the strings pull. Hang it somewhere sheltered rather than in a wind strong enough to swing the slices against each other, and check the knots and rings occasionally.

Does this wind chime bring balance or protection? +

No. Agate is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can bring balance or protection, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect. Nothing here is medical, psychological or financial advice. What it honestly does is remind you of something you decided yourself.
