Seven or nine?

The classical tantric system describes seven chakras. Nine-chakra systems are a later development, adding two centres above the crown, and they come from particular modern lineages rather than from the older texts. Neither is more “correct” than the other — they are different frameworks. Worth knowing before choosing between a seven-stone and a nine-stone piece. Our guide to 9 versus 7 goes into it properly.

Is this a real chakra set, and how can I tell? +

A chakra piece pairs a stone with each of the chakras, conventionally running red at the root through violet at the crown. Look for genuinely different materials rather than one stone dyed several colours. The familiar chakra rainbow is not ancient. Chakras come from tantric Hindu and Buddhist practice; the colour scheme was popularised by Western writers in the early twentieth century.

How should I look after this bracelet? +

Treat the piece as being as delicate as its softest stone: dry, out of strong sun, away from harsh cleaners. On a stretch bracelet the elastic is what fails first, not the stone, so roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide, and take it off before showering.

Does this bracelet balance or align your chakras? +

No. A chakra set is traditionally associated with that, and the tradition is genuine and often very old, but there is no scientific evidence that any stone can balance or align your chakras, or that it produces any physical or psychological effect.
