Rose quartz is quartz coloured by microscopic fibrous inclusions of a borosilicate mineral related to dumortierite — not by a dissolved impurity, as was assumed for a long time. Those inclusions are also why rose quartz is nearly always cloudy rather than transparent, and why it does not form the clean six-sided points that clear quartz and amethyst do. Well-formed rose quartz crystals are genuinely rare; almost all of it is found as massive chunks.
