What the stone actually is

Pyrite is iron sulphide, FeS₂. The gold colour and metallic lustre are the mineral itself, with no coating or plating on it. It is the original "fool's gold", and the tests that separate the two are simple and old: gold is soft, heavy and malleable, while pyrite is brittle, strikes sparks against steel and leaves a greenish-black streak when scraped on unglazed porcelain.

Leaving the slabs raw rather than polishing them keeps the crystal faces and striations visible — pyrite grows in cubes, and the flat natural faces are often strikingly geometric. The trade-off is that a raw surface catches on knitwear and shows wear sooner than a polished one.

Care — read this before you buy, not after

This is the one product on our site where care determines how long it lasts, so we would rather be blunt about it.

• Pyrite decays in damp. Exposed to air and moisture over time it oxidises — dulling, crumbling at the edges, sometimes giving off a faint sulphur smell, and in bad cases releasing acid that damages the elastic and any neighbouring beads. Collectors call it pyrite disease and it cannot be reversed.
• Take it off before washing your hands, showering, swimming or exercising. Sweat counts.
• Never cleanse it in water or salt water. Both will ruin it. Use sage smoke, sound or a selenite plate.
• Store it dry — a box, not a bathroom shelf or a damp bag.
• Roll it on and off rather than stretching it wide; that is what makes the elastic last.
• Bare pyrite is higher-maintenance than most stones. If you want pyrite you will never have to think about, our resin-cast pyrite pieces seal the stone away from air entirely.
