What this is, and what it isn't
The mineral — and a naming point most sellers get wrong. The host stone is quartz (SiO2), Mohs 7, hard and good for daily wear. The dark needles running through it are what give the stone its name, and here the trade name is loose: true rutile is titanium dioxide (TiO2) and is golden, coppery or deep red, never black. The black needles in almost all "black rutilated quartz", including ours, are tourmaline — schorl — or a related dark amphibole. The correct mineralogical name is tourmalinated quartz. We sell it under the name the market uses so you can find it, and we would rather tell you what it actually is than let the label stand unexplained. Nothing about the stone is less genuine for it; the needles are natural inclusions that grew inside the quartz.
The tradition. In crystal practice these needle inclusions are associated with protection, focus and cutting through mental fog. Those associations come from tradition and spiritual practice — they are not measured properties of quartz or tourmaline, and we describe them that way deliberately.
The evidence. There is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that crystals produce physical or psychological effects, clear energy, or affect outcomes. Quartz is genuinely piezoelectric — it is the timekeeping element in quartz watches — but that effect requires a precisely cut, electrically driven crystal, and a polished bead on your wrist does nothing of the kind. Where people find value it comes from the practice: naming an intention and keeping a reminder of it in view.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell real rutilated quartz from glass or a dyed imitation?
Look at the needles. In a natural stone every bead shows a different pattern of fine dark threads, at different angles and densities, and some beads will have more than others. Imitations are typically glass with a uniform swirl or a printed-looking streak repeated identically bead to bead, or a plain dark bead with no internal structure at all. Natural quartz is also cool to the touch, Mohs 7, and will not scratch with a steel blade.
Why do all the beads look different from each other?
Because the needles are natural inclusions that grew inside the quartz long before it was cut, and no two sections of the rough are alike. Some beads will be heavily threaded, others nearly clear, and the bracelet you receive will not match the photographs bead for bead. This variation is the point — it is the clearest sign the stone is natural rather than manufactured.
Is black rutilated quartz the same as black tourmaline in quartz?
In practice, usually yes — and the two names are sold interchangeably across the whole market. True rutile (TiO2) is golden, coppery or red; the black needles in stones sold as "black rutilated quartz", including this one, are almost always tourmaline (schorl), which makes tourmalinated quartz the technically correct name. We list it under the trade name because that is what buyers search for, and we say plainly what it is so you are not misled.
Which wrist should I wear it on?
Crystal tradition treats the left wrist as the receiving side and the right as the projecting side, so this stone is often worn on the left for protection and on the right for focus and intention. That is a tradition, not a rule, and there is no evidence one wrist behaves differently from the other. Wear it wherever it sits comfortably and takes fewer knocks.
How do I care for and cleanse it?
Quartz is hard and water-safe, so a quick rinse in lukewarm water and a soft dry cloth is fine — avoid hot water, ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals, which stress the elastic cord rather than the stone. Take it off before swimming or heavy gym work so the cord is not stretched wet. For cleansing in the traditional sense, moonlight, sound or simple intention are the usual methods; treat these as ritual rather than as anything measurable.
Will an 8mm stretch bracelet fit me?
The standard strand is made on a stretch cord to suit most adult wrists, roughly 6 to 7.5 inches. Measure snugly around your wrist with a tape or a strip of paper and choose based on that; the bracelet should sit close without needing to be forced over the hand. Always roll it on and off rather than pulling it — stretching the cord repeatedly is what eventually breaks these bracelets, not the stone.
