What this is, and what it isn't
The mineral. Black Tourmaline's proper name is schorl, an iron-rich boron silicate. At Mohs 7–7.5 it is one of the hardest stones we sell and stands up well to daily wear. It grows in long three-sided prisms with lengthwise striations — you can often see fine parallel lines on a polished bead, which is a good authenticity check.
One real physical property, stated precisely. Schorl is genuinely piezoelectric and pyroelectric: squeeze it or warm it and opposite ends of the crystal develop opposite electrical charges. This is measurable and has been known for centuries — it is why heated tourmaline attracts ash, and Dutch traders once called it the "ash-puller". It is also the origin of most modern claims that tourmaline emits energy or blocks radiation. It does not. The charge appears only during a change in pressure or temperature, is vanishingly small, cannot be felt, and does nothing to electromagnetic fields, Wi-Fi or phone signals. We mention it because it is interesting and true, not as evidence for anything more.
The tradition. In crystal practice Black Tourmaline is the protection and grounding stone, linked to the Root chakra. That association comes from tradition and spiritual practice, not from the piezoelectric effect above or any other measured property, and the chakra system is a spiritual framework rather than a scientific one.
The evidence. There is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that crystals absorb negative energy, shield against radiation, or produce physical or psychological effects. Where people find value it comes from the practice — the intention set, and the reminder worn.
