What this is, and what it isn't
The mineral, and where the shimmer comes from. Moonstone is a feldspar, and its floating blue-white glow — adularescence — is real, measurable optics rather than a surface treatment. As the stone cooled underground it separated into microscopically thin alternating layers of two feldspars, orthoclase and albite. Those layers are close to the wavelength of visible light, so light entering the bead scatters between them and comes back as a soft sheen that appears to sit just under the surface and moves as you turn your wrist. It is the same physics that makes a soap bubble shimmer. A stone with a painted or coated glow will show it only on the outside; genuine adularescence appears to come from within, which is a reliable authenticity check.
Care. Moonstone is Mohs 6–6.5 and, more importantly, has two directions of easy cleavage — planes along which it splits cleanly. That makes it noticeably more fragile than quartz despite the similar hardness, so a sharp knock against a doorframe or a desk edge can chip a bead. Keep it away from perfume and store it separately from harder stones.
The tradition. In crystal practice Moonstone is associated with intuition, emotional steadiness and new beginnings, and is linked to the Crown and Third Eye chakras. Those associations come from tradition and spiritual practice — not from the optical effect above or any other measured property — and the chakra system is a spiritual framework rather than a scientific one.
The evidence. There is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that crystals produce physical or psychological effects, and moonstone has no connection to the moon beyond its name and its appearance. Where people find value it comes from the practice — setting an intention, and wearing a reminder of it.
