What this is, and what it isn't

The mineral. Pyrite is iron sulphide, FeS₂, Mohs 6–6.5, and its metallic golden lustre is entirely natural — no coating, no dye. It is famous as "fool's gold", and the way to tell the two apart is simple: real gold is soft and heavy and can be dented with a pin, while pyrite is hard, brittle, and shatters. Pyrite also grows in astonishingly precise cubes and pentagonal dodecahedra straight out of the rock, with faces that look machined. Nothing cut them. Care — please read this one properly. Pyrite is the one stone in our range that can genuinely deteriorate if it is looked after badly. Because it is a sulphide, moisture and oxygen together slowly convert it to iron sulphate and sulphuric acid — mineral collectors call it pyrite decay. In practice it shows up as a white or yellowish powder, a faint sulphur smell, crumbling edges, and rust marks on whatever it was stored against. So: never soak it, never cleanse it in water or salt water, take it off before washing your hands or swimming, keep it out of a humid bathroom, and store it dry rather than sealed in a damp box. Treated this way a pyrite bracelet lasts indefinitely. Treated carelessly it can degrade in a season, and that is a property of the mineral rather than a fault in the piece.
